What happens during Drug Rehabilitation?

Alcoholism, drug dependence and addiction are known as substance use disorders and are complex problems. People with these drug abuse and addiction were thought to have a character defect or moral weakness and still in that belief. However, most scientists and medical researchers now considers the dependence on alcohol or drugs to be a long-term illness, like asthma, hypertension (high blood pressure), or diabetes.

Substance use disorder is an illness that can affect anyone. Nobody knows the exact causes of it, but the chance of developing a substance use disorder depends partly on the genetics – biological traits passed down through the families. A person’s environment, psychological traits, and stress level also plays a major roles by contributing to the use of alcohol or drugs.

The several substance abuse rehabilitation treatments are:

Detoxification: Detoxification is the initial stage of the rehabilitation process. It is a process by which the individuals receive medications in order to get rid their body from the harmful substances indulged during the abuse.

Behavioral interventions: Behavioral interventions are undertaken in order to modify the individual’s attitudes and their behaviors related to the substance use as well as help them to develop and to increase healthy life skills.

Multidimensional Family Therapy: Multidimensional family therapy is a therapy that focuses on the substance abuse problems and maladaptive family patterns which influences substance abuse. This also helps to improve the overall wellbeing of the family.

Group Therapy: Substance abuse rehabilitation encourages the group therapy. These group sessions encourages the recovering addicts to learn and grow from each other’s experiences and their progress. This helps the individuals immensely to know that they are not alone in their recovery struggles.

Relapse Preventive Measures: Though relapses are common, good outcomes are dependent on the adequate treatment length. Medications under the supervision and prescription of mental and medical health professionals are provided the individuals to help them to re-establish normal functions and lower their cravings for the substance.
